Each camera has a built in Neutral Density filter. This video demonstrates the use and purpose of the ND filter. Basically, you want to use an ND filter when you're lighting is too strong (ie when shooting outdoors) and you want to filter out some of the light reaching your camera. Note : Keep conscious of your ND filter setting. Try to keep it in the off position by default. If you're getting an underexposed image despite having normal lighting conditions, CHECK to see if your ND filter has been left on before cranking up your gain. Otherwise you'll end up with an underexposed AND grainy image (speaking from experience... horrible, horrible experience).
